The TH-series mounts inside the fireplace throat with a cast-iron or steel plate riding in a metal frame; the TS-series lives at the flue top and operates by stainless cable running the full flue length.

To identify yours, look for the stamped model number on the damper frame edge or the handle bracket, visible with a flashlight when the plate is fully open. TH-series plates measure 8, 10, or 13 inches across the throat opening; TS-series caps list the flue diameter they seal, not the plate width. If the stamp is corroded away, we measure throat width and depth during our camera inspection.

What you can safely check: verify the handle isn’t simply disconnected at the linkage, confirm no debris is blocking the track, and look for visible rust flakes or warping with the plate fully open. Use a flashlight, not your hand, in the throat.

Where DIY goes wrong: damper frames are set in high-temperature mortar at the smoke chamber throat. Removing one without supporting the masonry above risks dropping loosened brick or refractory into the firebox. On TS-series top-sealing units, the cable runs the full flue length; a dropped cable requires full chimney access to retrieve. The spring tension on some handle assemblies can snap fingers or launch hardware. We recommend a trained technician for removal and reset.
