Which Famco Models This Applies To

Famco built damper assemblies across several decades under slightly different naming, so the part you need depends on what’s actually in your firebox right now. Look for a stamped model number on the steel frame, usually visible when the plate is fully open. The FD-series and FDC-series retrofit dampers are the ones we see most often in San Jose homes built between 1965 and 1995, especially the FD-8, FD-10, and FD-12 sizes that match standard California flue openings.

The gotcha: Famco changed the pivot pin diameter on the FDC-series around 1987. An FD-series plate will not seat correctly in an FDC-series frame, and the hardware kits are not interchangeable even when the nominal size matches. Signs Your Famco Damper Repair Is Failing

• Smoke rolls into the room on startup. The plate isn’t seating flush against the frame, usually because the blade has warped from years of uneven heating or the seal gasket has compressed to nothing. In San Jose’s dry climate, the felt seals harden faster than in humid regions, often within 8-12 years.
• You feel cold air dropping down the flue even when the damper is “closed.” The frame has corroded at the throat, or the plate edge has rust-pitted enough to let air pass. Older Famco units with the original painted finish are especially prone to this; the paint flakes, moisture gets in, and the steel thins from the inside out.
• The handle turns but the plate doesn’t move. The linkage pin has sheared or the cotter pin has worked loose. • The plate is stuck shut and won’t budge. Creosote has glued it in place, or the pivot pins have seized in their bushings. DIY or Call Us?

There’s a safe middle ground and a hard stop. You can check: whether the handle linkage is visibly disconnected (look up past the lintel with a flashlight), whether creosote buildup is obvious on the plate edge, and whether the model stamp is readable for ordering. What you cannot safely do is remove the plate or frame without supporting the masonry above the throat. The lintel carries structural load, and disturbing it without shoring risks dropping firebrick into the firebox or worse.

We also don’t recommend burning with a stuck-open damper as a workaround. You’re losing conditioned air and creating a carbon monoxide pathway if the flue ever pressurizes wrong.
