DuraFlex Chimney Cap Installation Nationwide

Every visit starts with

Level 1 sweep and inspection to the NFPA 211 annual standard - flue, crown, cap, and flashing checked and photographed

Worth knowing

Chimney sweep logs do not sweep chimneys. They loosen some creosote - which then falls where a brush and vacuum still have to collect it.

DuraFlex Chimney Cap Installation: The San Jose Owner’s Guide

DuraFlex chimney cap installation in San Jose typically runs $340-$620 for most residential flues, including the cap, collar, storm collar, and sealant work. We stock DuraFlex-compatible caps in 8″, 10″, and 12″ diameters on our Willow Glen trucks, and most replacements are completed in under two hours. The camera tells you what it found. The quote tells you what it costs. Everything else is just conversation.

Most San Jose homeowners discover their DuraFlex chimney cap is failing during the first fall rain, when water starts dripping onto the firebox floor, or when a Santa Ana wind event peels back a corroded lid and deposits it in the yard. In the Almaden Valley and Rose Garden neighborhoods, we see accelerated corrosion from marine layer moisture trapped against galvanized steel caps that never fully dry between June and October.

Which DuraFlex Models This Applies To

DuraFlex produces three liner series, and the chimney cap must match both the liner diameter and the termination type. DuraFlex SS (stainless steel, .006″ wall) uses standard single-wall caps with a draw band or compression fit. DuraFlex HT (heavy-duty, .012″ wall, 316Ti alloy) requires a wider collar and heavier storm collar to accommodate the thicker wall without crimping. DuraFlex Pro, the commercial-grade line, uses a proprietary locking band that only interfaces with DuraFlex OEM caps or specific aftermarket equivalents we source through Haven’s buying network.

To identify your model: check the label tag at the top of the liner, visible from the firebox with a flashlight, or read the stamp on the existing cap’s collar. If the tag is gone, measure the liner outer diameter with a tape measure, not the flue tile inner diameter, which is the common mistake. A 6″ DuraFlex liner measures roughly 6.25″ OD; an 8″ measures 8.3″. Guessing wrong means a return trip and a second sealant application.

We stock Gelco and Olympia Chimney aftermarket caps that match DuraFlex specs at lower cost than OEM, with the same 304 or 316 stainless construction. For DuraFlex Pro systems, we recommend OEM only; the locking band geometry is too specific to trust an aftermarket interpretation.

Signs Your DuraFlex Chimney Cap Is Failing

Signs Your DuraFlex Chimney Cap Is Failing
  • Water staining on the firebox floor or smoke chamber walls. The cap’s lid seam or storm collar seal has cracked. In San Jose’s clay-heavy soils, foundation settling can tilt the chimney slightly, stressing the sealant joint at the crown-to-flue interface until it separates.
  • Rust flakes or orange staining on the liner or firebox. Galvanized caps in coastal-influenced microclimates, like parts of West San Jose near the bay, convert to ferrous oxide in 7-10 years instead of the 15+ you’d expect inland. The cap is sacrificial at that point; replacement protects the more expensive liner below.
  • Visible gaps between the cap lid and the mesh screen, or a lid that sits crooked. The internal support brackets have corroded through. We see this on caps installed before 2015, when DuraFlex used a thinner-gauge bracket that pooled condensation.
  • Birds, squirrels, or debris in the flue. The mesh screen has detached or rusted away. A missing screen is a code violation under California Building Code Chapter 10 and a direct path for ember escape during a chimney fire.
  • The cap is missing entirely after a wind event. The draw band or locking band failed, often because it was overtightened during original installation, work-hardening the stainless until it cracked at the screw point.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

Component Typical Range (San Jose)
DuraFlex-compatible cap (aftermarket, 304 SS) $140 - $220
DuraFlex OEM cap (Pro series) $260 - $380
Labor, removal, and installation $180 - $240
Storm collar and high-temp sealant $45 - $75
NFPA 211 Level 2 camera inspection Included

Price varies with access height, roof pitch, and whether the crown needs resealing after cap removal. We deliver a written price before any work starts, per Haven Standard Clause 1. The 365-Day Done Right Promise covers installation defects; the cap itself carries the manufacturer’s warranty, 10 years for 304 stainless, lifetime for 316Ti. Every job includes a documented photo record under Haven Standard Clause 4, archived since 2009.

What you can safely check from inside: shine a flashlight up the flue and confirm the cap is present, the mesh is intact, and no daylight shows around the storm collar. If you see any of the symptoms above, stop there.

What goes wrong with DIY: working at roof height on a pitched surface, handling a cap that weighs 8-15 pounds while balancing, and achieving a watertight seal without trapping moisture against the liner. The silicone sealant must be rated to 400°F minimum, applied to a clean, dry surface, and tooled into the joint without gaps. We’ve resealed three DIY installations in San Jose this year where the homeowner used standard hardware-store silicone that off-gassed white acetic acid residue into the flue.
