How Level Two Chimney San Jose Was Born in San Jose

It was late fall in San Jose, 2017. The air smelled of wood smoke from the older homes near Willow Glen, and we were standing in a driveway on a quiet street off Meridian Avenue, watching a homeowner argue with a sweep crew who had just finished what they called an “inspection.” The homeowner, a woman in her forties who had paid top dollar for a Craftsman bungalow, had been told she needed a full liner replacement. $4,800. No photos. No video. Just a verbal report and a handwritten quote on a carbon copy.

Call (669) 291-2770

We had been working with Level Two Chimney Co. for years by then, running camera inspections in other markets, building the archive that would later become Clause 4 of the Haven Standard. That evening in San Jose, we asked if we could look. We ran our camera. The flue was dirty, yes. It needed a sweep. But the liner was intact. Hairline surface cracks, nothing more. A HeatShield application would handle it for a fraction of what she’d been quoted.

That was the moment. San Jose had the housing stock - 1950s ranch homes in Cambrian Park, mid-century builds in Almaden Valley, the old Victorians downtown - but it didn’t have a local team working to the standard we believed in. We opened this branch the following spring. The promise was simple: every San Jose homeowner would see what we saw, in writing, before anyone touched a tool.

Corrine Halstead’s Personal Connection to the Chimney Cleaning Trade

I didn’t grow up in this trade. I came to it sideways, through a rental property I owned in Campbell that had a chimney fire in its second winter. The sound was like a freight train in the walls. The aftermath smelled like wet campfire for weeks. When I finally hired someone to tell me what had happened, the sweep showed up with a flashlight and a brush, spent twenty minutes on the roof, and handed me a receipt. No photos. No explanation of why creosote had built to that point. I remember standing in the living room, holding that receipt, feeling like I’d paid for a performance rather than a service.

I started asking questions. I bought my first chimney camera, a used unit from a retiring sweep in Los Gatos, and spent a winter learning to read flue tiles the way someone else might learn to read X-rays. The first time I saw a cracked liner on that little screen - the way the fracture opened like a fault line in the masonry - I understood what this work actually was. It wasn’t cleaning. It was diagnosis. It was preventing that freight train sound in someone else’s walls.

That was over ten years ago now. I’ve swept chimneys in San Jose through drought years when homeowners burned more than ever because gas prices spiked, and through wet winters when creosote glazed thick and heavy in the flues off Bascom Avenue. I’ve crawled roofs in Saratoga fog that made the shingles slick as ice. I’ve sat with homeowners in Milpitas who thought they needed a rebuild and showed them, frame by frame, that they didn’t. What gets me out of bed is the message that comes later: “We showed your video to our inspector. He said you saved us thousands.”

If I weren’t doing this, I’d probably be fixing old motorcycles. There’s something similar in it - the patience, the need to see inside something before you decide what’s wrong, the satisfaction of a machine that runs clean because you understood it first.

Meet Corrine Halstead - The Person Behind Every Job

I’m Corrine Halstead, Owner and Founder of Level Two Chimney San Jose. I hold the state license required to perform chimney and venting work in California, and I’ve built this branch around a simple idea: the person who inspects your chimney should be able to explain what they found without relying on scare tactics or vague warnings.

My training came from years in the field - camera inspections, liner installations, masonry repair - supplemented by the ongoing education the trade demands. NFPA 211 updates. New appliance venting standards. The specific challenges of San Jose’s clay soil and seismic requirements that affect chimney structure over time.

What makes me different from a corporate franchise technician? I still carry a camera on every job. I still climb the ladder when the roof pitch demands it. And on weekends, you’ll find me at the San Jose Flea Market, hunting for vintage tools with my daughter. That patience - the willingness to sort through rust and grime to find something worth restoring - is the same patience I bring to your flue. I don’t recommend work I wouldn’t pay for myself. That’s not a slogan. It’s how I sleep at night.

My commitment to you is direct: when Level Two Chimney San Jose works in your home, I stand behind every finding, every photo, every written quote. If I wouldn’t show it to my own mother, I won’t show it to you.

Our Promise to San Jose Homeowners

Our values aren’t abstract. They’re policies you can hold us to.

Honest pricing. Clause 1 of the Haven Standard - Have it in writing - means your price is locked before we start. In 2023, a homeowner in Sunnyvale called us after another company quoted her $3,200 for “extensive flue damage.” Our camera showed normal wear. The sweep and inspection cost a fraction of that. She had the video. She had the written scope. She knew exactly what she was paying for.

Quality parts. We specify the brands we use - Gelco caps, Olympia Chimney liners, Famco dampers - because these are components we’ve watched perform through multiple burning seasons in San Jose’s climate. When we recommend a repair, we tell you the manufacturer, the model, and why it fits your specific setup.

Standing behind every job. The Haven Standard requires documented evidence on every job, Clause 4. You don’t get a verbal report. You get photos, readings, and a record you can reference next year, or show your home inspector, or use to get a second opinion. That documentation is our warranty in action.

Our Credentials

Our Credentials

Every pro working under our name is required to hold the license and insurance their state requires. Here’s what that means for your home:

  • State-licensed - California requires specific licensure for chimney and venting work. We maintain it without exception. For you, this means accountability to the CSLB if anything goes wrong, and the assurance that the person on your roof has met the state’s minimum competency standard.
  • Insured & bonded - Accidents on ladders happen. Damage to roofing happens. Our coverage means your homeowner’s policy isn’t the first line of defense if something unexpected occurs during your service.
  • Years of local experience - We’ve worked in San Jose long enough to know which neighborhoods have unlined chimneys from the 1960s building boom, which areas see the heaviest creosote buildup from oak and eucalyptus burning, and how Santa Clara County’s permit requirements affect liner replacements.
  • Strong local reputation - We serve the same communities where we live. Repeat customers in Los Gatos refer their neighbors in Campbell. Property managers in Santa Clara call us for multiple units because the documentation we provide satisfies their liability requirements.

These credentials matter because chimney work happens inside your home’s most dangerous system. A properly functioning flue protects against carbon monoxide infiltration and chimney fire. An improper repair can make both risks worse. The license, the insurance, the documented record - they’re not paperwork. They’re the structure that keeps you safe.

Rooted in San Jose

This branch lives where we work. Our service calls take us through the oak-lined streets of Almaden Valley, past the orchards that still cling to the hills above Saratoga, into the post-war neighborhoods near Berryessa where the chimneys are original and the flues have never seen a camera. We’ve swept fireplaces in condos off Santana Row and in the Eichlers of Palo Alto’s borderlands.

We’re here Monday through Saturday, 7:00 AM to 7:30 PM, and Sundays 7:00 AM to 7:00 PM, because San Jose homeowners deserve a local option that doesn’t treat them like a dispatch number. When you call (669) 291-2770, you reach our live coordinator who connects you with our local team. No mystery. No runaround. Just the Haven Standard, applied to the chimneys of the city we call home.
